The TANAS art space is following and presenting the ongoing developments in contemporary Turkish art in Berlin – in close collaboration with Turkish cultural movers and with no obligation to present a particular point of view. TANAS sees itself as a platform for continuing discourse and regular interaction between Turkish artists and curators and the German and international audience. In view of the local cultural landscape as well as the social and political implications, Berlin is the ideal place for this. Since 1989 Istanbul and Berlin have also been linked as partner cities, and scholarship programs and cooperation among cultural institutions within that framework have created a complex web of relationships in the arts.

René Block oversees the non-commercial TANAS project space, thus continuing his longtime interest and involvement with contemporary art from Turkey. In 1994 he had already presented an overview of the then still unknown scene in the exhibition Iskele. Turkish Art Today (ifa-Galerie, Stuttgart). In 1995 he set new standards for the Istanbul Biennial under the title Orient/ation; the exhibition Iskorpit - Contemporary Art from Istanbul followed in 1998 (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin). From 2007 to 2011, René Block was also in charge of publishing a series of monographs on Turkish artists with YKY Press, Istanbul, as well as in organizing a series of exhibitions titled “Adventure Istanbul” for the Kazim Taskent Sanat Galerisi.

TANAS was established in close cooperation with the Vehbi Koç Foundation in Istanbul, which also finances it. The Foundation promotes educational, social and cultural projects and founded the Sadberk Hanim Museum, the first private Museum in Turkey, in 1980. The word TANAS is an anagram of sanat = art in Turkish.
