Collectorspace is a New York-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that makes significant artworks in private collections temporarily public, and exhibits them in emerging art markets around the world. Collectorspace opened its first location in Istanbul in September 2011. The Istanbul location, a room formerly part of the living area of a private residence, is divided into a public exhibition space in the front and a resource center in the back.
In its exhibitions, Collectorspace presents a single artwork from a private contemporary art collection as a starting point to review the entire collection and to profile the collector. The artwork on display is put in context with a video portrait of the collector, showing the ways in which the artworks are displayed at the domestic context, and introducing the methods and motivations of the collection. Talks and publications are used throughout the exhibition to bring independent reviews of the collection being presented, and to provide feedback to the collector.
The resource center houses books on collecting, a selection of international art magazines, catalogs of recent biennials and art fairs, as well as online resources on art market activity. It also includes information on the infrastructure of collecting, such as art insurance, storage, transportation, and conservation.
